An Australian Customs helicopter is back in service in Torres Strait after undergoing a major overhaul in a 43 day operation. Australian Helicopters Pty Ltd Bell 412 EP, VH-RHJ has successfully
completed its first 5000 hourly inspection which required the overhaul
of the main rotor transmission, main rotor head and blades, tail rotor
gearboxes, flight control components and repainting.

Chief Executive Officer of Australian Helicopters Neil Shea says the
people involved in the project are to be congratulated for the
successful completion of the highly sophisticated work. “The logistics and timing of the project were well planned and the work
was executed by a dedicated team of people with a ‘can do’ attitude,”
Mr Shea said.

VH-RHJ was taken to the Heliwork facilities at Redcliffe airport in
Brisbane where the major components were removed and taken to Helitech
for complete overhauls. The aircraft was completely disassembled to provide inspectors access
to all areas of the aircraft with the whole job clocking up a total of
3000 hours.

Mr Shea said the management and engineers at Heliwork and Helitech along with Australian Helicopters engineering staff and Project Manager have done a wonderful job. “They have delivered a very safe and extremely well presented aircraft.” Mr Shea said. Co-ordination and team work was also the key to the successful overhaul of another helicopter in the Australian Helicopters fleet. The Mackay based Kawasaki BK 117 B2 VH-VRP underwent a 600 hourly inspection, and had both engines and transmission overhauled.

The work on the aircraft also saw the installation of a 30 million candle power search light, specialised Emergency Service radios and fixed provisions for an external hoist. The work was carried out at the Australian Helicopters facility in Gladstone with overhaul work on the components done in New Zealand. The hoist and search light system was also supplied from New Zealand.

VH-VRP operates for a marine Pilot transfer contract and provides technical backup for the Australian Helicopters South Australian operation.
