some videos of the new H-SIM professional helicopter simulator:
These video are realtime captures of the front video channel. (the simulator has three of them).
The image generator system is a genuine H-SIM software, and not a video game. It has unique features (grass, special effects,etc..)
I don't know diddly squat about approaches to oil rigs but I wondered...
1. Would a pilot make an approach like that putting all the cranes and junk on the nose, in the path of any go around? If it were me I think I'd want clear space behind the pad if possible. (No idea what the wind is doing though)
2. The perspective from the sim is that the 'camera' is mounted in the nose of the aircraft and gives an even view from about 10 o'clock round to 2 o'clock. Isn't any helicopter flying into an oil rig likely to have two crew and therefore P1 or P2 is likely to get a restricted view, say from 11 o'clock round to 2 o'clock or from 10 o'clock round to 1 o'clock, depending? (My understanding is that some rig landings are almost impossible for P1 / P2 depending on the wind and approach because the pilot is un-sighted due to being on the wrong side of the aircraft.
Just my 2p worth. Someone who knows what they are talking about will probably be along later.
you are quite right Mc Bad. the purpose was not at all to make "The" perfect approach(moreover it was made by a student pilot ! ), but more to show the image generator capacities.
Concerning the field of view, you a right too, it's symetrical. this video only shows the central video channel, and the Sim has three of them, which represents a total field of view of 180 ° * 50 °.
